Statue of Liberty's crown to reopen July 4
The National Park Service is devising a plan for those wishing to climb the narrow, circular staircase of 168 steps inside the statue to its crown, which has been closed since Sept. 11.
Reporting from Washington -- The lofty crown of the Statue of Liberty, closed to the public since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, will reopen July 4, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced this morning.
Salazar announced the reopening, with the National Park Service devising a plan for those wishing to climb the narrow, circular staircase of 168 steps inside the statue to the crown, in an appearance inside the crown this morning on NBC News' "Today" show.
Admission will be "egalitarian," the secretary maintained. The National Park Service said today that access to the crown would be limited to 10 people at a time, guided by a ranger.
The reopening of the crown atop the statue, a gift to the United States from France in 1885 and a symbol of freedom standing on its island in New York City's harbor since then, will take place on Independence Day -- the anniversary of July 4, 1776, the date inscribed on the tablet that Lady Liberty holds in her hand...

Then click on “new search” if you are starting a new search or click on “saved search” if you have already started a search and have saved it. If you click new search a space on the screen will appear where you type in the name of the passenger who came through Ellis Island. Once you have typed in the correct name on the correct lines, and the country they came from next to where it says country (Origin) click continue. If they have the name on record, a list of people will come up, then select the correct person. When selected a list of information about the person will appear. If they don't have the name on typed on record, a list of options will appear. Select the one you like by clicking on the white circle next to the option you like. Then click on “Search on the checked name choice”. If a list of names appears, select the correct name, information on the person will appear. If the list of options appears again the option you just selected will not be on the list. From here you can select another option and continue searching by repeating the steps....
