scratching, only a select few horses were pegged as contenders to win the 2009 Kentucky Derby, and now there are even less contenders who are believed to have a shot. Kentucky Derby 2009 a maiden race for six of the trainers

Heading into any Kentucky Derby, there are always questions about how 20 precocious 3-year-old horses will handle the atmosphere.
This year the same could be said about the six trainers who will lead their horses to post in a Derby for the first time.

"If there's no focus on them, they'll all be fine," two-time Derby winner Nick Zito said. "But if you lose a little sight and there's focus on you, then you have to watch what you are doing. You just have to do what you always do."

But those six newcomers -- Tim Ice, Gary Stute, Tom McCarthy, Kelly Breen, Chip Woolley and Derek Ryan -- have recent history on their side. Today marks the 135th running of the derby at Louisville, Ky.’s prized Churchill Downs, with the main race kicking off at around 5 p.m., and Chicagoans can celebrate at viewing parties and off-track betting parlors all over the city. To ensure every element of your day is purely Kentuckian, Decider presents a crash course on the event’s most sacred traditions.
