Mint Julep goes Irish for 2009 Kentucky Derby
Planning a party to celebrate the Run for the Roses on Saturday May 2? It wouldn't be a proper Kentucky Derby Party without authentic mint julep cocktails, Churchill Down's signature drink since 1938 when they first began selling them in souvenir glasses for 75 cents...





Derby to display 'world's largest mint julep'
Racing fans who want a tall, cool drink won't have to look far at Churchill Downs, where the track will display what it calls the "world's largest mint julep" Friday and Saturday.
The 6-foot-tall display in the new Infield Club will be an acrylic replica of the glass patrons will get when ordering a mint julep during Kentucky Derby week.
The track says the replica of the collectible glass can hold about 206 gallons of the cocktail, or more than 5,000 drinks...


A Derby Day party with punch
t's Derby Day — May 2 this year — when horse racing, fancy hats, betting and mint juleps prevail (not necessarily in that order). Churchill Downs, which has hosted the Derby since its inception in 1875, is offering party tips on its Web site, kentuckyderbyparty.com. Some of the content is commercial (with brand-name sponsors and the like), and you also have to register. If you can get past that, you'll find recipes for classic and novel Derby fare (Kentucky hot browns, grilled peach salad with molasses vinaigrette), most notably from celeb chef Bobby Flay...
