NTSB Scrutinizes Pilot Actions in Q400 Crash Probe
The pilots of the Colgan Air Bombardier Q400 involved in the February 12 crash near Buffalo, N.Y., that killed 50 people did not observe the so-called sterile cockpit rule and the captain appears to have violated Colgan Air’s policy prohibiting the use of the crew room to sleep overnight, according to testimony read this morning during the NTSB’s public hearing on the crash.

NTSB hearing officer Lorenda Ward reported that the crew engaged in non-essential conversation while flying below 10,000 feet in violation of FAA rules, including, for example, a three-minute discussion on the crew’s experience in icing conditions and training. “This conversation occurred just a few minutes before the stick shaker activated and while the crew was executing the approach checklist,” said Ward...


Families to watch NTSB hearings on Buffalo crash
CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. - Families of passengers killed when Continental Connection Flight 3407 crashed onto a home near Buffalo will be looking for answers as they gather to watch a public hearing on the accident.

The National Transportation Safety Board is holding the three-day hearing in Washington starting Tuesday, but will broadcast it in Buffalo, where the flight was headed, and Newark, N.J., where it originated...

NTSB: Student pilot at fault in RMC plane crash
Federal investigators say the crash of a Rocky Mountain College airplane was partly caused because the student pilot did not follow approved navigational procedures and was not aware of where he was.

Andrew Scheffer, then 18, was flying the Piper Archer aircraft alone on a night cross-country flight to Powell, Wyo., on March 25, 2008. He was trying to fulfill a training requirement for his commercial pilot certificate when the single-engine plane crashed in the Pryor Mountains about 40 miles south of Billings....
